AVB keen to keep striker from MLS switch

Ex-Spurs defender's public courting of Jermain Defoe have been rebuffed by Andre Villas-Boas.

Former Blackburn Rovers and New Zealand captain Ryan Nelsen, now manager at Toronto FC, publicly declared his interest in England striker Jermain Defoe this week in the hope of tempting the player to Toronto.

Defoe has been in outstanding form for Tottenham this season, though most of his action has come in the cups, scoring eight goals and becoming joint European top goalscorer for the North Londoners.

The interest from Toronto's Nelsen, who also turned out for Spurs in the twilight of his career, was however flatly snubbed by Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas.

The Portuguese, despite preferring £26 million man Roberto Soldado in the Premier League, still values 31-year-old Defoe, who he believes is committed to wrestling the striking position back from the Spaniard.

"We want the player to stay on and hold on to those last years of his contract, " said the Tottenham manager.

"The player at the moment is our top goal scorer and he is chasing the European record for the club as well which is important for his individual motivation."
