Wenger confirms Ozil could play striker in future Giroud absence

Mesut Ozil might have to play a 'false nine' if Olivier Giroud finds himself out the team for any reason in the near future.

On Tuesday night the lack of strength in depth in Arsenal’s first-team became clear, as Nicklas Bendtner toiled up front in a display dubbed ‘embarrassing’ - even in his Danish homeland.

Meanwhile one of Arsenal’s summer striker targets Ciprian Marica scored his first goal on his full debut for Getafe in Spain, and The Gunners will face off against another of their star targets in the form of Luis Suarez in the evening game with Liverpool at The Emirates today.

The fact is, that when Olivier Giroud is out injured or rested there is very little in terms of back-up for the team - and already a number of names are being linked with a potential move to The Emirates in January including the likes of Karim Benzema of Real Madrid.

It certainly would seem to be one of the areas in which Arsene Wenger would need to consider his options in January - and after the recent signing of Mesut Ozil for a club record fee the club seems more willing than ever to plunge some cash into the squad.

But the boss is still not sure whether he will make a move for another striker in January, instead preferring to wait until December, assessing the situation then, and deciding if they need a front-man - until then he has a solution:

"I do not know if we will strengthen this winter. Honestly, I want to see where we are at the end of December. And then we have Bendtner , Park. We have many solutions. Even Mesut Ozil has played there before."

Considering an Arsenal fan put Bendtner up for sale on Gumtree for £3.50 the other day, I am going to go ahead and assume that he isn’t exactly the most popular option around The Emirates faithful at the moment.

As for South Korean international Park Chu-Young - well considering he has not played a Premier League game for the club since a game against Manchester United at the end of January 2012, his only six minutes in the Premier League for Arsenal as a late cameo - we are going to guess he is not exactly a popular option with Wenger himself.

So it seems that Ozil is the next option, and probably at the moment, the best option if Giroud is out of contention.

Sure he isn’t going to bag goals galore, but he certainly will provide plenty of opportunities - he fits the bill for a player in the ‘false nine’.

Of course Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott return from injury soon, at which point this topic will not be a discussion.

But for now, the fact Bendtner and Park are being mentioned as potential Premier League players, is a worry for Arsenal.
