Former Spurs defender wants Defoe in the MLS, AVB keeping an eye on Gaitan

A round up of key news stories this morning about Tottenham Hotspur.

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ryan Nelsen wants Jermain Defoe to join him in the MLS.

Nelsen is the current coach of FC Toronto and says there are few players more suited to playing football in the USA and Canada.

“To get a guy like Defoe for MLS, I cannot think of many that are more suited. I think if you ask most Premier League teams, they would take Defoe,” said Nelsen.

Tottenham are being strongly linked with a move for Benfica star Nicolas Gaitan.

Portuguese newspaper A Bola has claimed that Tottenham and Manchester United are monitoring the form and future of the player on a consistent basis.

Tottenham’s main left sided midfielder, Andros Townsend, is currently playing down the right wing, which means there is a position available at left midfield.

Andre Villas-Boas has praised his team’s performance as Tottenham progressed in the League Cup.

Spurs drew 1-1 with Hull City at White Hart Lane before eventually winning 8-7 on penalties.

“We played really well in the first half. We wanted to have a little more penetration but there was some really great football, speed in possession, lots of one-touch combinations and I was really happy with the performance,” said the boss.
