Leverkusen ace: 'I would be the fourth German at Arsenal, so that wouldn't be bad'

Arsenal may be interested to learn of recent comments from Leverkusen attacker Gonzalo Castro.

Is Gonzalo Castro the next German Gunner? His contract at Bayer Leverkusen won’t expire till 2016 but in an interview with German football magazine 11 Freunde Gonzalo Castro said, that he could see himself living in another country - and even mentioned Arsenal.

A transfer to Spain is a non-topic for the midfielder despite his Spanish heritage.

“I could envision myself getting to know another culture and language”, Gonzalo Castro was cited in regards to his plans about the future.

Elaborating on moving back to Spain he added: “That was a goal earlier, but that is unrealistic due to the financial crisis.”

So why not England? “I would be the fourth German at Arsenal, that wouldn’t be so bad”, he said.

Arsenal could enjoy Gonzalo Castro. Other than his failed try to establish himself at the German international team the 26-year-old has a huge upside.

Castro can play as a full-back, but is predominantly a midfielder, able to take on an attacking or defensive role, useful if ever the club did actually move for him - which at present there is no suggestion of, it is Castro himself creating the link.

His market value is at an £8.8 million high. In his nine years with the first squad of Bayer Leverkusen he has had 239 appearances and is considered as an all-rounder.

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller has praised Castro’s talent: “Gonzalo is a pro with outstanding playing skills and tactical genius. Especially in the current season he has once again made a leap in quality.”

His loyalty is another quality he brings to the table. Castro, has played at Leverkusen since 1999, starting at their youth academy at the age of 12, and lives next to the facility. He is a player who obviously buys into a program and would do the same at Arsenal too.

What do you think? Should Arsenal move for  Gonzalo Castro if the possibility presented itself?
