So what is all the fuss about, Chelsea are top of the league and the panic is over … sure the performance was not great but they did beat Fulham in the end which takes them back to the summit of the Premier League.
Before the game though, Juan Mata’s involvement, or indeed lack of involvement, was again a major talking point.
Mata was not even in the squad for the game, as Jose Mourinho again opted with his favourite player Oscar to play in the number 10 role.
After the game Mourinho spoke to the Sky Sports Saturday Night Football panel about the performance - including, of course, Jamie Redknapp.
The former Liverpool and Spurs midfielder has recently stated his belief that Mata should be in the Chelsea line-up considering his excellent performances last season - which in fairness is the viewpoint of most Chelsea fans on Twitter this evening.
So when Redknapp quizzed Mourinho on Oscar, the subject inevitably changed to Mata … and Mourinho produced yet another wonderful quote to go down in his own history books.
Here is a quick transcript of what was said:
‘’Congratulations Jose, you must be so pleased with Oscar’s development, man-of-the-match today?’’
Mourinho’s paraphrased response:
‘’Yes I am, I understand that lots of people including yourself you like very much Mata and you believe that Mata should be in that position. I think the evolution of the team and the way I want to play with Mata and Oscar together I want that but for that to work it has to work to a certain way of play. Because I am not ready to change Oscar’s position, I think Oscar is a number 10 that gives us creativity but at the same time when we want to press up Oscar is a runner... We will stick with our ideas, and you are paid to have an opinion and I am paid to work and put in practice my ideas …I respect you a lot I think you are very good but Chelsea manager is Jose Mourinho not Jamie Redknapp.’’
And Redknapp laughed and joked and said ‘Absolutely’ with all the conviction of a smiling turkey at Thanksgiving.
