GOAL: Sturridge gives Liverpool lead against Manchester United

Daniel Sturridge has scored the opening goal at Anfield.

Liverpool go into this game off the back of back-to-back wins in the Premier League. No side has managed to score a goal past Brendan Rodgers’ team in league football this season so United had a task on their hands before kick-off.

Manchester United boss David Moyes will be looking for a reaction from his team following a 0-0 draw against Chelsea which they probably should have just edged over the course of the 90 minutes. He will also hope for a better result then he ever managed at Anfield while in charge of Everton.

United will be confident after their 2-1 victory at Anfield last season, which came after Liverpool started the match playing some of the best football of the entire 2012/2013 league season.

However they are without Wayne Rooney, who has suffered a head injury in training prior to the game, while Liverpool will also want to go top of the table with victory.

Here is how the teams lined up for the fixture.

Liverpool: Mignolet, Johnson, Enrique, Agger, Skrtel, Lucas, Henderson, Gerrard, Coutinho, Aspas, Sturridge.

Subs: Jones, Sterling, Wisdom, Kelly, Ibe, Flanagan, Alberto.

Manchester United: De Gea, Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Young, Carrick, Cleverley, Giggs, Welbeck, van Persie.

Subs: Anderson, Hernandez, Nani, Valencia, Buttner, Lindegaard, Smalling.

And it is Liverpool who have taken the lead, but Daniel Sturridge might not have known much of it.

Daniel Agger powered in a header from a Steven Gerrard corner kick, and while trying to duck out of the way, the England international flicked the ball beyond David de Gea.

What a 24th birthday for the striker...

How will it end?
