Transfer rumour analysis: Featuring Fellaini, Rooney, and Kone

Andi Foster analyses the transfer chatter regarding targets for Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham, Crystal Palace and West Brom.

Whilst there is talk of £85m moves taking place (further mocking FFP) and more (rapidly becoming dull) Higuain and Jovetic chatter – very little has actually been happening. City have been busy spending their pocket money again (preparing the ultimate headache of how to keep so many players happy), the Schurrle transfer still hasn’t happened (leading me to believe that Arsene Wenger could have been left in charge of negotiations) and the England Under 21’s proved that the next generation of English footballers will not be producing a golden era for England (more like a return to the dark ages).

But what else is happening in the land of transfers?

Fellaini to Arsenal

I wrote about this for LadyArse last week and I think the basic idea is that the Arsenal fans would love him and he is exactly what the club need. It would show a statement from the club and would also show that Wenger can spend money. Unfortunately – as this article suggests I fear that Wenger will again rely on the ever-returning Diaby to fill the more defensive midfield void. There is also no guarantee that Fellaini would actually want to join Arsenal. Arsenal have money to spend – that is well documented and they do have targets (as confirmed by Gazidis in his Q&A). But it looks unlikely that they are close to completing anything at this current time.

Rooney to Chelsea

Now, I don’t know if you have heard – but Mourinho is back at Chelsea….He wants a forward. Rooney could be available. Mourinho is well known for buying established players. The link writes itself really. But United will fight very hard to ensure that Rooney won’t be moving to Chelsea. But then it comes down to money. If (note the if) Rooney is available - I’m pretty sure that Chelsea will be in the mix for his signature and United will pocket a small fortune.

Kone to Liverpool

With Wigan relegated there will be a battle on the cards for a number of their players. But whilst this story doesn’t end up reading quite as stupid as it sounds – the simple fact is that with Aspas soon to be entering the fray at Anfield - Kone just wouldn’t be given enough chances to succeed at Liverpool. Even if Suarez leaves (becoming inevitable) Liverpool will be looking for a star name to fill that void (but hoping it turns out better than their Carroll attempt). So no. The link is basically a transfer story dot to dot. A transfer story by numbers…..and I’m pretty sure that I could create some of those for myself.

Leandro Damiao to Spurs

Leandro Damiao is a talented chap. I don’t doubt that. But I am so bored of this story. Spurs need new forwards and will improve that position in the summer – but this version of the story has basically been placed to encourage Spurs to make a move whilst trying to force the hand of other interested clubs as well. Damiao could end up at Spurs – but I doubt it. If Real Madrid come in for him to replace Higuain, or Athletico Madrid come in for him to replace Falcao or a French club come in for him to further laugh at FFP then he will not be going to Spurs.

Incidentally – what kind of story doesn’t actually quote the agent’s name? Any form of credibility goes out of the window……

Balde to Crystal Palace

Now the story goes that Celtic were due to have Balde for a medical – only for a better offer to come in from Crystal Palace. But now he has been for a medical in Glasgow anyway after the player’s agent said that he had no intention of speaking to Palace. So – that’s the end of that. But on the positive side for Palace fans – at least they are trying to get some new faces in.

Carlton Cole to West Brom

Cole was released by West Ham at the end of the season – but with previous mentor Steve Clarke in charge at West Brom reports have suggested that there is a chance the two could reunite this summer – especially considering that West Brom have now had to give 17 goal man Lukaku back to Chelsea. The reports make a lot of sense. Clarke could again reignite Cole’s career and do it without a fee. West Brom will be short of goals next season so I’d expect them to sign another forward as well if Cole came in. But if West Brom can build up Cole’s confidence then he could certainly be an asset for them.
