Report - Garay has 'gentleman's agreement' for Manchester United move

Portuguese newspaper Record has reported that Ezequiel Garay of Benfica has agreed to join Manchester United.

Garay has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford for much of the year with one media source in Portugal claiming the deal had been done months ago.

Ridicule of that claim now seems unjustified with a further report from the same source suggesting that the former Real Madrid centre back has agreed a move to Old Trafford in a deal worth 20 million Euros.

The report doesn’t provide any official confirmation that a deal has been agreed. It simply mentions a form of ‘gentleman’s agreement’ between Benfica and David Moyes’ Manchester United.

If a deal has been done then it could be a very good deal for United, which effectively completes the defensive section of the current squad, providing superb competition for places.

It would leave United with a core of top quality defenders for Moyes to choose from; Garay, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans.

Garay offers height, power, strength and superb ability on the ball which are all very good reasons United seem to be going after him as Rio Ferdinand’s long term replacement.

It also would be a deal likely done with Sir Alex Ferguson’s influence ahead of his departure from his managerial role with the club.

United fans shouldn’t get too carried away until there has been official confirmation on the deal because there is still time for other sides to come into the equation and prevent Garay from becoming Moyes’ first signing as United boss.

Garay had also been linked with Barcelona but his Real Madrid past seems to have prevented the Catalan club from pressing forward for a transfer and David Luiz of Chelsea would more than likely be a more popular signing at the Nou Camp club.

There is wary to be reason of Record because it wouldn’t be the first time in the history of football, a newspaper fabricated a story just for publicity and to sell copies to make cash.

Garay is more than likely considering a move away because of the heartbreak he’s suffered with Benfica and his necessity to ensure that it doesn’t repeat itself next season and beyond.

What do you make of the latest rumours? Do you expect an official deal?
