This summer could see some of the world’s finest strikers on the move, indeed arguably the very best four strikers (assuming Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi do not count) could leave their current clubs, with Edinson Cavani, Radamel Falcao, Robert Lewandowski and Neymar all linked with a transfer.
Chelsea have, at one stage or another, been linked with all four of these players, and they reportedly still foster ambitions of bringing one of them to Stamford Bridge this summer. The trouble is, they look like they have been beaten to the punch in all four cases.
Falcao seems close to finalising a move to Monaco, who, thanks some to some favourable tax laws and their rich owners, can outbid even Chelsea when it comes to offering players bumper contracts.
Robert Lewandowski looked set to join Bayern Munich, but their capture of Mario Gotze might see Borussia Dortmund refuse to sell the Polish striker to their rivals as well. However with one year left on his contract, there is speculation that Lewandowski might be happy to wait until next year to make the switch to Munich on a free.
Neymar always seemed set to join Barcelona, although Chelsea have apparently made enquiries about the Brazilian forward in the past. Former Blues manager and now Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has now all but confirmed Neymar will be heading to Barcelona this summer.
Finally Manchester City look to have taken the lead in the race for Napoli’s Edinson Cavani, with rumours that Edin Dzeko could be used as part of the deal after the Italian club president Aurelio De Laurentiis confirming he was in talks with City.
Even Lazar Markovic, the Serbian youngster who had looked certain to join Chelsea at one stage, now looks likely to move to Benfica instead.
Mario Gomez is the name now being touted as Chelsea’s main target this summer, and having already seemingly missed the boat on so many top quality players, Chelsea will surely be looking to tie up a deal as soon as possible.
