Manchester United: Sacrifice Rodriguez to sign Falcao?

Manchester United may have to give up any hope of signing Porto’s James Rodriguez if they want to land Falcao from Atletico Madrid.

James Rodriguez is a player United have been following for a very long time and a player who could dramatically add to the attack of their side should they want to go after him in the summer window.

However, fresh reports are suggesting that Atletico Madrid want Rodriguez as a long term replacement for Falcao and they will spend big to try and land him from the Portuguese giants.

That leaves United with the problem of who to go after because as much as they’d like both players in the building ahead of the 2013/2014 season, it’s extremely unlikely to happen.

The advantage of signing 21-year-old Rodriguez is the fact that he’s one of the most exciting talents playing European football at the moment.

He’s a player who can do multiple roles across the front of the team playing as a number nine or number ten and he can also drop off and play an attacking midfield type of role if he’s required to do so.

He’s shown an impressive strike rate this season, which has backed up his good form from last season; nine goals in 13 starts this year and 13 goals in 14 starts last season so he has no trouble finding the back of the net consistently.

Falcao would almost definitely be the more expensive of the two signings considering his dominant experience and the fact that other sides would try everything to get him, which would push the price up.

The 27-year-old striker has been scoring goals at a very impressive strike rate for a long time; 24 in 28 games this season, 24 in 33 games last season and 16 in 22 games for Porto in the 2010/2011 season.

Falcao would effectively be like United signing guaranteed goals because he has a successful method, which he uses in the attack of the Atletico Madrid team which has been proven to work.

If United made a move to sign Rodriguez at the start of the summer then the big risk is that they will alienate the Spanish club if they then decided to try and sign Falcao at the same time.

Atletico would not take kindly to having one of their main summer targets poached by another top European side, which could have the effect of making them extremely hostile to United and other sides interested in taking Falcao off their hands.

All of the rumours are pointing towards a big summer signing for the Old Trafford side as they scramble towards the finish line, dropping points along the way in their quest to wrestle the Premier League title back from Manchester City.
