Chelsea forgotten man Oriol Romeu returns to light training

Oriol Romeu has delivered Chelsea some good news, he is returning to training for Chelsea.

During the Club World Cup Romeu was struck down with a cruciate knee ligament injury and the diagnosis was that he would be out for the season.

Oriol was starting to nail down an important role for Rafa Benitez and was visibly maturing, but luck just wasn’t on his side.

It has now been three months and on his Facebook page, Romeu has stated that he should be back to full training in 2-3 months.

According to his Facebook update, he is “Getting the feelings back!” Whilst he will still very miss the rest of season, it is still great news that his injury is coming along well.

I find it hard to believe that not many people have seemingly picked up on how much Chelsea have potentially been missing him.

What people may forget is that Romeu was bought from Barcelona and it is evident in his play, as his passing is of a very high standard expecially for a young player who hasn’t had much first team experience – but then again that is the quality of the Barca youth system.

It has been pointed out that central midfield has been problematic in terms of depth for Chelsea and the sale of Raul Meireles and the peculiar loan of Michael Essien to Real Madrid had been highlighted as prime reasons.

Whilst this is true, having Romeu available really would have helped Chelsea shut out games and be even more composed going forward.

My greatest concern for the player is that this long term lay off will harm his status around the club and have him laid at the back of the minds of many in charge. This would be a horrible result for all involved - but with a new a manager set to arrive in the off-season he will get a fresh start.

The fact his recovery is on or ahead of schedule is a great start to that end.

Personally, I think that Oriol has great potential to be a pivotal player for Chelsea in the future and lets hope that this injury doesn’t implicate his future for him.
