Cech blunders whilst Courtois sets records in Spain

Chelsea’s established keeper had an afternoon to forget at Old Trafford despite his team's comeback, whilst the on loan Belgian set a new record for Atletico even as his side lost 1-0.

Whilst Petr Cech might be the happier man compared to Thibaut Courtois this Monday, it is the young Belgian who impressed the most on an individual level this weekend.

Manchester United raced into a two goal lead at Old Trafford with Cech perhaps feeling that he could have done better for both of the goals, although the second, a looping free kick from Wayne Rooney that evaded everyone, is something that can happen to any keeper.

Meanwhile Courtois broke a 22 year old record by reaching his 820th minute without conceding a goal at the Vicente Calderon, Atletico Madrid's home stadium.

A 53rd minute goal did see Atletico end up on the losing side at home to Real Sociedad, but Courtois will know that their incredible 14 game winning run at home prior to that was largely due to his performances between the sticks.

With Courtois turning heads all season, there have been plenty of rumours that club's will look to pry him away from Chelsea in the summer, as the Belgian is unlikely to be content to remain Cech's understudy when teams like Barcelona reportedly ready to give him a starting role. As Cech's form has occasionally dipped below his very high standards this season, is there a case for bringing the Belgian into the starting eleven at Stamford Bridge next season?

Clearly this would be a major step for Chelsea to consider, with Cech having been such an important player for them for so long. Perhaps he could at least feature in their cup runs next year whilst giving him the chance to settle at the club and learn from Cech without replacing the Czech keeper entirely.

They would perhaps have not expected Courtois to progress so quickly, but they do now have a decision to make, as it would be unwise to lose one of Europe's most promising keepers without ever giving him a chance at Chelsea.
