Liverpool, Skrtel, and big spending Russians...

Make no mistake about it, if Liverpool let Martin Skrtel leave it will be a huge mistake by Brendan Rodgers.

Although the transfer window has slammed shut in England, it is still open in many other places around Europe.

What this means is Premier League clubs need to have their guard up against approaches for some of their best players.

The perfect example is Martin Skrtel at Liverpool with former side Zenit St Petersburg thought to be keen on a £15 million transfer before the end of February.

Liverpool originally signed Skrtel from the Russian club back in 2008 and it seems they want the Slovakian centre back to go back to Russia.

If there is any truth in this then Liverpool would be stupid to do anything other than dismiss it. Skrtel is coming under a little bit of criticism at the moment which could be the reason for the rumours which is all they are.

They need him if Liverpool are to complete their objectives under the managerial reign of Brendan Rodgers.

He has been out of the Liverpool side for Jamie Carragher recently, simply because Rodgers has wanted a little more leadership in the back four but as a defender he is still as good as Liverpool can get.

He has the no nonsense, brutal sort of attitude which you need to be a defender in the Premier League.

He’s perfectly suited to the physical nature of the English game because he’s been brought up on hostile football in Eastern Europe and he’s proven so many times that he can do the job for Liverpool.

If they are thinking of entertaining bids for him then they need to charge as much as they can get away with because they’ll need to go out and invest in a long term replacement.

Carragher is not getting any younger and Rodgers has proven himself not to be a naïve boss so it’s doubtful that he would let this happen.

These rumours have apparently been circulating in Russia for a while so the fact they’ve only just made it over to England suggests there’s very little truth in them.

If you’re worried Liverpool fans, and you should be, then rest easy because Rodgers doesn’t seem like the sort of boss who will let one of his best players leave, especially now.

How do you see Skrtel’s role over the rest of the season?
