Will Arsenal respond to their top four rivals with Maher swoop?

Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Liverpool have all now entered the transfer market as they look to strengthen their chances of a top four finish, could Arsenal try to trump them all with a move for Maher?

Whilst Arsenal would have expected Liverpool and Chelsea to strengthen this January, and no doubt feared that their North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur would also bring in a couple of players, they could hardly have expected that Everton would be splashing the cash as well, and there must now be real anxiety amongst their fans that Arsenal need to get into the market or risk missing out on Champions League football.

Everton signed Leroy Fer on Monday, with Spurs confirming the acquisition of Lewis Holtby shortly afterwards having moved the German's summer move forward. Liverpool look set to add Coutinho to the arrival of Sturridge and Chelsea, who already have a fantastic squad, bought Demba Ba to bolster their flagging, Torres-based, attack.

Meanwhile, Arsenal look set to be frustrated in their pursuit of David Villa, who seems to have been their main target this month, and they now have very little time to enter the market. Mohamed Diame still looks a likely move, but they will probably face competition for his signature as well.

Therefore, the news that AZ Alkmaar's manager considers Arsenal would be the best destination for his midfield star Adam Maher has been a welcome boost to the Gunners. Maher has made no secret of his desire to play at a higher level than the Dutch Eredivisie, and if Arsenal were to make a significant bid for the player they could probably force through a move this January.

If they could sign Maher, it would represent a significant coup for the club, as the 19 year old is one of the most highly rated young players in Europe, having already picked up two caps for the Dutch national team.

Maher has previously been linked with moves to several other European giants, and if he continues his impressive form this season, Arsenal might find themselves behind some of the financial giants of the continent come the summer. Arsenal will likely need some reinforcements this January, and Maher would be an exceptional signing if they could pull it off.
