Watch: The own-goal that shook Italian football

Andrea Masiello has admitted scoring a deliberate own-goal in favour of Lecce in 2011, in order to help them stave off relegation. Watch the video here.

We all know about Antonio Conte’s recent 10-month-ban in relation to match fixing charges but coinciding with that has been the admission of former Bari defender Andrea Masiello that he deliberately scored an own goal in order to help opposing side Lecce avoid relegation in the 2010-11 Serie A campaign.

As Jeda’s shot came firing in the centre-back clumsily bundled the goal into his own net, past the despairing Belgian goalkeeper Jean-Francois Gillet.

He admitted the misdemeanour as part of a bargain plea to avoid a prison sentence as part of the ‘Calcioscommesse’ investigations.

He has been given a 22-month suspended prison sentence while Lecce have been demoted to Lega Pro level, the fourth tier of Italian football for their part in the scandal, while Bari have been docked seven points from the start of the Serie B campaign.
