Edinson Cavani or Radamel Falcao?

The South American superstars picked up five goals between them last night, and Chelsea have been heavily linked with both, but which of them is the best out and out striker in the world today?

If you were to assemble a world eleven at the moment, there would be a temptation not to play an out and out striker at all, such is the quality of Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi.

But if you were after a striker, (and you should be, strikers are the cat’s pajamas, after all no child dreams of being a false nine when they’re kicking a ball around the playground) then Cavani and Falcao are arguably the two best around at the moment.

Despite missing a penalty, Cavani netted a hattrick against Lazio last night. Falcao went off in the 53rd minute in Atletico's match against Real Betis, having still managed to grab a brace in his time on the pitch. Picking between the two of them, is evidently a nigh on impossible task.

On goals alone, Falcao just edges it. The Colombian has returned 32 and 36 goals in his last two seasons, at Porto and Athletico Madrid respectively. Cavani has "only" managed 32 and 33 for Napoli.

Falcao has also started the quicker this season, his hattrick against Chelsea in the Super Cup adding to his seven in five games in the league. Cavani’s three goals last night took him to five for the season so far. However it’s not just about goals, and it has to be taken into account that Falcao has been playing in (and winning) the Europa league, in which he has scored 29 of his goals over the past two seasons.

Cavani’s Napoli, on the other hand, were in last years Champion’s League group of death (with Bayern Munich, Villareal and Manchester City), and went out in the 2nd round of the tournament. He still managed five European goals in eight games.

Both of these stars have been linked with Premiership moves in the past. But with their continuing brilliance in their own leagues, you have to wonder if English clubs have missed the boat. The prices demanded now would be unaffordable for all but perhaps Manchester City and Chelsea. Athletico paid an initial 40 million euros for Falcao in 2011 (I say paid, they may still owe Porto a fair bit of money), Cavani’s new buy out fee is rumoured to be €55 million.

However if your club did have an unlimited budget, which of these two would you be happiest to see come through the door?
