Fresh from shrugging off a touchline spat with Roberto Mancini, Paul Lambert’s reward is being faced with the news that he must soon lock horns with another passionate Italian.
As well as achieving early success as a footballer manager, with promotion to League One in his first season in charge, Di Canio has become notorious for his explosive rants.
Bizarrely his most recent victims have been his own goalkeeper and fans. Having already knocked out Stoke and Burnley Di Canio said that he was hoping for a ‘glamour tie’ in the fourth round of the competition. The small numbered balls were not generous enough to grant a game with Manchester United or Chelsea, but did ensure Premier League opposition.
It is a fourth round League Cup match up that will see both managers pleased, and quietly confident of progressing. Currently sitting fourth in League One, Di Canio will be positive of seeing off a young Villa team experiencing a period of up and down transition.
For Lambert he will be satisfied to be taking on a team from the lower divisions, a hunting ground that has so far proved fruitful in a short but thriving managerial career. The County Ground will be a tough place to go but Villa will still be buoyed after beating Manchester City in their own back yard.
Anyone gaining a ticket, in the proximity of the dugouts, should be advised to take an umbrella. On October 29th spittle may well be flying.
