Veseli and the Manchester United players in need of League Cup action

Manchester United welcome the Toon Army to Old Trafford tomorrow night, and boss Sir Alex Ferguson will use the opportunity to rotate his squad and give opportunity to youth and fringe players, and new signings.

We have all read the reports that Wayne Rooney could be set for a comeback tomorrow, so who else could join him in the line-up? Here is a look at six of the players who will hope to be included on the United teamsheet.

Federico Macheda

Macheda's Manchester United career is one of immense promise and overall frustration. Most annoying is the fact the two loan spells he has been on at Sampdoria and QPR have been unproductive, and Ferguson has elected to keep him on the sidelines rather than send him out again this year. The striker has been in goalscoring form, for the club in pre-season, and for their under-21 chance, and he is sure to play tomorrow night, it is up to him to take the opportunity.

Portuguese man of mystery Bebe has a point to prove at Old Trafford, and after an impressive pre-season, hopes for him a lot better than they had previously been. There is still concern over where his best position is, and it was a bit of a surprise to see him stay rather than go on loan, but this match represents a chance for him to play a first team game at Old Trafford for the first team in more than a year.

Darren Fletcher

Sir Alex Ferguson has already hinted Fletcher will play a role tomorrow night, as his return from illness continues to pick up. He played as a substitute against Galatasaray in the Champions League, and this is a match earmarked to hand the Scot a starting spot and see how he gets on. If he can play over 70 minutes it will certainly be a case of job done as far as his recovery goes.

Alexander Buttner

Dutch left-back Buttner had a goalscoring debut to remember against Wigan, but has not had an opportunity since. This game will be another test for him, and could even see him face United old-boy Gabriel Obertan on the wing. If he is hoping to oust Patrice Evra it is a battle he will need to win, but most important it will be another opportunity for the defender to familiarise himself with English football, with Newcastle likely to present a tougher challenge than Wigan.

Frederic Veseli

Swiss centre-back Frederic Veseli is the wildcard choice to feature in United's central defence. The 19-year-old was signed by the Red Devils in January from Manchester City, where he complained at a lack of opportunities, but so far it has been a similar story at United. He has been featuring for the under-21s in recent weeks, and watching on as the club fixed their defensive crisis by playing Carrick alongside Vidic. This is their chance to discover a new option and see what he can do.

Nick Powell

Nick Powell was the subject of a lot of hype after he scored on his debut against Wigan, with comparisons made to Paul Scholes by his manager. This is an opportunity for him to further challenge himself and to do his talking on the pitch. An excellent performance here and he really will throw himself into the mix for more first team chances.

Jesse Lingard

Promising youngster Lingard has told United's official website he is hoping to be involved tomorrow night. The 19-year-old starlet featured on the club's pre-season tour and scored last week for the club in the Manchester Senior Cup. The attacking midfielder may find himself on the bench, but would welcome any minutes that come his way.

Angelo Henriquez

Chilean attacker Henriquez was United's final summer signing, and the teenager is currently waiting for his first taste of first team action. With a work permit secured, it is likely the teenager will feature either from the start or as a substitute. If he does, he will hope to score and become the fifth out of five signings this summer to net on their home debuts.
