The Curse of the San Siro strikes again

Neither Inter nor AC Milan have been able to record a win at their famous home ground this season, is it because of the new synthetic pitch?

For years the pitch at the San Siro has been a problem, the grass always seemingly in a state of disrepair (remember the state it was in when Arsenal went there last season?), it has even been blamed for the rash of injuries that seemed to have hit AC and Inter in the past few seasons.

Over the summer a partly synthetic playing surface was introduced. Whilst this should proved adequate in combatting the groundskeeping issues the clubs have had, the run of results that has followed at the San Siro has been truly extraordinary.

Inter and AC Milan have played there seven times in competitive matches, and failed to produce a single win between them. All four of the Serie A games have been lost, with three draws coming in European ties against Vaslui and Rubin Kazan for Inter, and Anderlecht for AC Milan.

At the weekend the run of losses in Serie A continued with Inter losing 2-0 to Siena, who, before Sunday, had yet to win in the league this season. Inter had previously lost 3-1 to Roma at the San Siro.

AC Milan, who admittedly have been in poor form at any ground they have played at, have lost 1-0 to Atalanta and Sampdoria at home this season. Both of the Milanese team have recorded victories away from home, Inter beating Pescara and Torino, and a Pazzini hat trick gave AC a 3-1 win over Bologna. Inter in fact have been perfect away from home, beating Torino, Pescara and Vaslui without conceding a goal.

Whilst AC Milan's run could perhaps be blamed on the problems they are suffering as a club in general, the woeful form inter have shown at home is a stark contrast to their away performances.

It would be strange if both were having such a hard time adjusting to the new pitch, after all, the teams turning up to win at the San Siro have even less experience of the surface. AC Milan have a home match against Cagliari next, if they fail to record a win there, is the only logical conclusion we can draw is that the San Siro is really now cursed, with the ghost of the ripped out surface haunting AC Milan and Inter?
