Chelsea transfer rumours - Fact or fiction

Chelsea have been arguably the most busy European club in the summer transfer window so far.

The Blues have made some key transfers to upgrade their squad and are expected to bring in and sell two-three more players before the transfer season wraps up.

In this article, we will have a look at the latest rumours related to Chelsea and the credibility and likelihood of each rumour.

1. Edinson Cavani

According to many reports over the past few days, it was reported that Edinson Cavani was planning a move away from Napoli after his wife got mugged for a £14,500 watch in Naples.

However, it is highly unlikely that any deal would actually occur between the Chelsea and Napoli as Cavani has affirmed that he is currently committed to the Serie A club and might consider a move to the Premier League in the future.

"Are the big Premier League clubs looking at me? My response can only be Forza Napoli!" he told Il Mattino newspaper.

Verdict: Fiction

2. Victor Moses

It has been reported that Chelsea are apparently ‘closing in’ on Wigan winger Victor Moses. The Blues have already have had three bids rejected for the 21-year-old and Wigan owner Dave Whelan has told Roman Abramovich to come up with £10m for Moses if he wants to take him to Chelsea.

However, even though Chelsea’s latest offer of £6.5m plus add-ons for Moses does not meet up with Wigan’s demands for the player, it likely that the Latics would eventually accept the FA Cup holders’ deal and allow Moses to complete his ‘dream move’ to Stamford Bridge.

Verdict: Fact

3. Cesar Azpilicueta

Another player who could be heading to West London this summer is Marseille right-back Cesar Azpilicueta.

The 22-year-old , who is currently in England to ply his trade at the ongoing Olympics, is considered as one of the hottest young right-backs in world football and would be a great and in-fact a much better replacement for Jose Bosingwa.

Chelsea’s interest in the player is real and concrete and with Marseille admitting that the player could leave the French club this summer, one could surely expect Azpilicueta to don the blue jersey from the 2012-13 season.

Verdict: Fact

4. Ashley Cole

In a piece of insane transfer news, it has been reported that Manchester United are planning an audacious bid for England legend Ashley Cole.

Even though it is rumoured that Cole could be leaving Stamford Bridge this or next summer due to the stalled-contract-negotiations between the two parties, it looks unlikely that he would join one of Chelsea’s fiercest rivals.

Added to that, it would be stupid of United to replace an ageing 31-year-old left-back with another player of the same age. This is a complete baseless and false rumour.

Verdict: Fantastical Fiction

5. Michael Essien

Chelsea are apparently open to offers for Ghana international Michael Essien. After a number of injuries and fitness issued, the 29-year-old is no longer considered a first-team player for the Blues and it won’t surprise me if he’s eventually shipped off this summer.

Yes, the player might be keen on staying at the club, but with the amount of midfield depth Chelsea already have now and with more signings expected to arrive, the Di Matteo and Co.would surely be eager to clear off some wage bill by getting rid of injury-prone and ‘old’ players like Essien.

Verdict: Fact

Do you agree? Who else would you like to see in and out of the club?
