Junior Seau became the eighth member of the '94 San Diego Chargers team to have died last week, leading one teammate to declare they are 'cursed'.
A curse, a hex, or just bad luck? Either way, there is no denying that one American Football team has endured their fair share of tragedy.
The '94 Chargers were no run of the mill team either, they won the AFC Championship and went on to lose the 1995 Superbowl 49-26 to the San Francisco 49ers.
Right after that, tragedy began to strike, when months later linebacker David Grigg was killed in a car crash.
One year later, running back Rodney Culver died in a plane crash in Florida.
The most unlikely of the lot was linebacker Doug Miller, who died after being struck by lightning on a camping trip in Colorado in 1998.
In 2008 Curtis Whitley died of an accidental overdose and Chris Mims too of an enlarged heart.
This was when teammates began to discuss whether a curse had been placed on the team, with five men dead.
Shawn Lee and Lew Bush both died last year from heart attacks, before Junior Seau's apparent suicide last week.
Reuben Davis, defensive tackle, told news outlet TMZ, '"It's kind of like a 'Final Destination' movie I feel we might be cursed, and it's scary."
In the Final Destination films, a group of teenagers cheat death after one had a premonition about an upcoming tragedy, but death catches up with them one by one in a series of freak accidents.
It is hard not to see the parallels between the films and the Chargers plight, but even so the tragedies are not to be made light of. The deaths can only be described as 'freakish' in luck and extremely sad.
The surviving members of the team have pledged to look out for each other and meet far more frequently.
Meanwhile the tragedies almost continued at the weekend. A woman taking part in a memorial beach paddle for Junior Seau was found face down in the water and emergency services had to be called.
Fortunately she survived. The remaining '94 Chargers will hope there are no more deaths to speak of for many years and the idea of a curse is put to bed.
