The new Wealth Management for Emerging Markets business area covers Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and assets from Asian emerging markets booked in Switzerland.
Paul Raphael will be a member of the UBS Wealth Management Executive Committee and will report directly into Jürg Zeltner, CEO UBS Wealth Management.
During his 25-year career at Salomon Brothers, Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse, Paul Raphael held a number of leadership roles across all emerging market regions. Most recently, Paul Raphael managed his own financial advisory and investment firm.
Commenting on Paul's appointment, CEO UBS Wealth Management Jürg Zeltner said: "The emerging markets are a key pillar of UBS's growth strategy, and we want to further strengthen our leading position in these regions. As these markets have very specific needs, UBS has decided to intensify the management focus on them."

Paul Michel Raphael (1963) holds a master's degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management and a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Maryland. In 1986 he joined Salomon Brothers, where he rose to become Head of Investment Banking and Capital Markets for Latin America. In 1994 he moved to Merrill Lynch, where he ultimately held the position of Chairman and Regional Head of Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Paul Raphael joined Credit Suisse in 2004, initially as Head of Equity Capital Markets (ECM) and soon thereafter as Co-Head of the Global Markets Solutions Group, including ECM, Debt Capital Markets, Derivatives and Leveraged Finance Origination. In 2007 he became Head of Credit Suisse's investment banking operations in the Asia Pacific region. Most recently, Paul Raphael managed his own financial advisory and investment firm.
