Alexander Sorloth was very much on the fringes of things at Crystal Palace last term, but fans are calling for him to be given a bigger role next season.
Alexander Sorloth arrived at Crystal Palace with huge expectations following a sensational season with Danish champions FC Midtjylland, but his contribution in his debut season was minimal, with manager Roy Hodgson often favouring record-signing Christian Benteke.
Throughout the season fans were calling for the Norwegian international to be given a chance to spearhead the attack, but Benteke remained the first-team linchpin - despite scoring a meagre three domestic goals.
Former Wolves striker Bakary Sako was used by Crystal Palace as the impact forward off the bench during the run-in, meaning Sorloth was limited to just four appearances in his debut season in England.
Sorloth stated his claim on Saturday evening though, netting a late winner for Norway in their friendly against Iceland (3-2), and Crystal Palace fans took to Twitter to commend the striker and to voice their frustrations at his lack of game-time last season:
Sorloth gets the winner for Norway. Everyone’s desperate for a new striker but I reckon he will be an absolute animal after a full pre-season in England. Can’t wait.#CPFC— CPFC HQ (@CPFCHQ) June 2, 2018
Agree, I'd like to see Sorloth start for CPFC next Season— neil ogilvie (@neiog) June 3, 2018
Desperately want to see him given a chance next year. Even when Benteke was struggling he didn't get a look in. Need to take a punt and see what he can do! If Wickham could stay fit (unlikely) I'd argue we don't even need a 4th striker...— Bollard (@Bradley_Pollard) June 2, 2018
What a classy take and finish..... “Not good enough for the Premier League”, “Benteke a more proven striker!”.... How can he not prove himself, if you don’t play him MORE! Well done Sorloth— Robert Bailey (@Bunglebob66) June 2, 2018
We needed him to start or even play more for us last season. He troubled Chelsea when he came on away and looked great in rare outings. Must play more next season or we’ll lose a good player.— Robert Bailey (@Bunglebob66) June 3, 2018
That one was for Roy— Mark Wilson (@threluja) June 3, 2018
I honestly think he will be vital for us next year and it's great competition for bentekers— Charlie (@chipdiddy93) June 3, 2018
Christian Benteke replaced Romelu Lukaku at half time in Belgium's goalless draw at home to Portugal tonight. Meanwhile, Alexander Sorloth scored an 85th minute winner for Norway who beat Iceland 3-2 away! #CPFC— TEB (@TheEaglesBeak) June 2, 2018
Well we know who needs to start next season then— Becs (@becsj76) June 3, 2018
Start the Norwegian— Becs (@becsj76) June 3, 2018
Plenty of Crystal Palace fans seemingly want to see Benteke take a backseat after his shortcomings last season, with 22-year-old Alexander Sorloth given a real opportunity to show what he can do.
