Sony’s Days Gone is one of the most anticipated games of 2019, and – although The Last Of Us Part 2 is rumoured to be coming out this Fall – it’s up to Studio Bend to continue the PlayStation 4’s hot streak for critically acclaimed exclusives that make Xbox fanboys secretly weep from agonising jealousy. While on the surface it merely looks like “another zombie game” heavily inspired by Sons Of Anarchy and World War Z, Bend Studios’ senior staff animator Emmanuel Roth insists that it’s not.
Speaking with VG247, Roth explains what makes their “freakers” different from zombies:
“Our creatures are unique,” says Roth. “They are the ‘freaker’, and we insist that they are not zombies. The undead, they bite you, you get infected – it’s nothing like that for us. We chose for it to be a pandemic. Some people get infected, some are immune.”
Roth further mentions that the freakers also have their own ecosystem and circle of life with swarmers attacking and feeding off the smaller, childlike creatures referred to as “newts”.
Days Gone launches for PlayStation 4 only on April 26.
In other PlayStation news, insanely detailed character art for The Last Of Us Part 2 has surfaced, and Hideo Kojima has confirmed that Death Stranding is slightly behind schedule.
