Translated "Persona 5: The Royal" trailer seems to rule out female MC

Persona 5 The Royal Mysterious Female

Translations of Atlus' Persona 5: The Royal trailer heavily suggest the mysterious female is not an optional protagonist.

Atlus yesterday released another teaser that finally revealed Persona 5 R is titled The Royal. In addition to unveiling the game’s title, the brief commercial also showed off a new female character. While this resulted in myself and many others wrongly assuming that this Shujin Academy girl will be an optional female protagonist similar to what Atlus did with Persona 3: Portable, translations - unfortunately - seem to rule this out.

While all the translated trailers on YouTube differ in wording, they all get across that the mysterious female doesn't like or agree with the Phantom Thieves' methods as - although helping people is a wonderful thing - she believes victims of society have to solve their own dilemmas. Seeing as the Persona 5 community on Twitter has also stated that she’s a first-year unlike Joker who is in second year, this lass being an optional female MC now appears extremely unlikely.

Although the possibility of a female MC is now slim, a datamine back in February hinted at a female Joker with a “ponytail” for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, so perhaps we’ll be able to play as this new character in Nintendo’s Colosseum.

As for Persona 5: The Royal, the safest bet at the moment is that this new female character will be a confidant and maybe another addition to the Phantom Thieves.

We still don’t know exactly what The Royal is, but Atlus will reveal more during the Persona Super Live Concert on April 24.
