Tottenham Hotspur knocked Manchester City out of the Champions League.
Tottenham Hotspur have made it through to the semi-finals of the Champions League, advancing past Manchester City in frankly bizarre fashion at the Etihad Stadium.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side were 1-0 up from the first leg thanks to a Son Heung-min strike, but many were giving the edge to City – especially with Spurs striker Harry Kane out injured.
Raheem Sterling’s early goal for City levelled the tie and seemed to put City in the ascendancy, but Son popped up with two quickfire goals to give Spurs the advantage and flip the tie on its head.
However, an unbelievable start to the game saw Bernardo Silva make it 2-2 inside 11 minutes, and Sterling added his second and City’s third before the 20 minute mark.
Sergio Aguero put City 4-2 up, but just as Spurs were looking doomed, Fernando Llorente grabbed a goal with his hip, meaning Spurs were going through on away goals.
Nobody could have predicted the final twist though, as Sterling completed his hat-trick – only for the goal to be chalked off thanks to VAR, meaning the celebrations from the home fans ended as Spurs went through.
The emotions of the game were clear for all to see, as Dele Alli and former Spurs teammate Kyle Walker collapsed to the ground for very different reasons after Sterling’s ruled-out goal, with Alli exasperated and Walker seemingly thinking City were through.
Additionally, Spurs right back Kieran Trippier – formerly of City – shushed the home fans after Llorente’s goal, mocking his former club in another great show of passion from a Spurs player.
