Emmitt Smith has launched a stinging critique of the Cleveland Browns, questioning why the franchise has not fully committed to Shedeur Sanders as its starting quarterback.
The Hall of Famer and NFL’s all-time leading rusher voiced his frustration after the Browns, under new head coach Todd Monken, declined to name Sanders the clear starter.
Smith’s comments have intensified scrutiny on a Cleveland organization once again facing questions over its lack of direction at quarterback.

Speaking to Kay Adams, Emmitt Smith suggested the Browns are overcomplicating a situation that, in his view, has an obvious answer.
“What does Cleveland have? Absolutely nothing,” Smith said, arguing the team has failed to present a convincing alternative to Sanders.
Smith compared Cleveland’s hesitation to how other franchises have handled young quarterbacks, pointing to a greater willingness elsewhere to commit.
“But they handed it to Drake Maye and the kid out in Jacksonville,” Smith said, highlighting the contrast with Cleveland’s cautious approach.
Smith backs Shedeur Sanders to lead Browns
Emmitt Smith made it clear he believes Sanders has already earned the right to be trusted with the job.
“I haven’t seen anyone else earn the right but him,” Smith said, insisting Sanders has not been given enough opportunity to establish himself.
Smith also highlighted the impact Sanders has on the team, saying there is a noticeable difference when he is on the field.
“When he’s on the football field, they look and feel better,” Smith said, before praising Sanders’ leadership and presence.
“His energy is different. His swag is different. His level of confidence is different,” Smith added, framing those traits as strengths rather than concerns.
As Cleveland prepares for another offseason without certainty at quarterback, Smith’s remarks underline a familiar criticism that the Browns continue to hesitate at the very position that demands belief and commitment.
