Arsenal youngster Emmanuel Frimpong has seemingly forgotten about a goal he struck back in 2010.
Arsenal beat Aston Villa’s under-21s last night 4-2, blowing them away courtesy of an inspired first half display led by Serge Gnabry.
The fourth goal was headed home by Emmanuel Frimpong, making his first appearance since a comeback against West Brom in the under-21s on September 12.
Frimpong spent much of last season on loan at Charlton, after recovering from his second cruciate knee ligament injury sustained on a promising loan spell at Wolves.
He was clearly delighted to get on the scoresheet last night, predictably posting on Twitter after the game. But did he get a bit caught up in the moment, incorrectly listing it as his first every goal for Arsenal?
This is because Frimpong has actually scored for Arsenal once before, but it was so long ago we would not blame him for forgetting.
The Ghanaian midfielder netted in a 4-2 win for Arsenal’s reserves (now the under-21s), on January 12, 2010, in a 4-2 win away at West Ham.
In case he needed reminding, here’s an excerpt of the match report from Arsenal.com, “But just five minutes later Arsenal’s lead was restored. Frimpong collected the ball 20 yards from goal and powered a well-placed shot into the bottom corner of the net.”
Also featuring for that Arsenal side in the match was Fran Merida, Francis Coquelin, Vito Mannone, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas (who scored a hat-trick), and notably Sol Campbell.
We’ll give Frimpong one thing though. He was a substitute that day, so technically the goal he netted last night, was his first ever scored as an Arsenal starter, if he wants to claim that.
Let’s just hope he does not leave it so long until his next goal he forgets about this one…
