Right now Newcastle United are locked level on 59 points with Tottenham Hotspur with five games to go and Chelsea just two points behind.
To the winner, takes the spoils of Champions League football, and quite possibly Emmanuel Adebayor.
Should Spurs end up in fourth, the feel good factor will remain at the Lane over the summer and the majority of supporters would in all likelihood choose to see Adebayor signed up on a long-term deal.
If they do not, then Tottenham will essentially be forced to start again, and Adebayor will consider his own options.
Having had a taste of Champions League football with Real Madrid on loan last season, he will not want another year without it.
A return to Manchester City? Don’t bet on it. Despite Roberto Mancini’s reconciliation with Carlos Tevez, bringing Adebayor back is likely to be just a bit too unlikely.
Manchester United would not have him, having plenty of alternatives in attack already, and a return to Arsenal is pretty much a no-go considering his fallout with the fans- and that was before he joined Tottenham.
Which would leave one option open to him in England if he wanted to pursue Champions League football- Newcastle United, if they pip Spurs to fourth.
He would become the club’s third African striker alongside Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba, but would offer a different option in attack to them both, and could add vital experience to the squad.
Even if he went there as third choice, he would get his fair share of games, and if the unthinkable happened and Demba Ba left, Newcastle would have a solid and proven striker on their hands as second choice.
The stumbling block could be his wages, but Adebayor must accept the deal he was offered at Manchester City will not be matched by any one, and wherever he goes he will have to take a pay cut.
There may be offers from abroad too for him, we can’t see Real Madrid coming back after turning down the choice to sign him permanently a year ago, but French big spenders PSG could be a likely destination.
It would be simplest of all for him if Tottenham qualify for the Champions League, and he can still be the difference maker in helping them do it, but if they fail, his increasingly nomadic-career may well take him to the North East.
