Emmanuel Acho delivered a sharp critique of J.J. McCarthy as questions grow about the quarterback’s standing in Minnesota.
With reports linking the Vikings to veteran passers, the former NFL linebacker offered a direct evaluation of the 23-year-old.
His comments intensified the discussion about where the franchise is headed at quarterback. The assessment focused on McCarthy’s college track record and early NFL results.

Emmanuel Acho questions J.J. McCarthy’s pedigree and NFL trajectory
J.J. McCarthy, selected No. 10 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, missed his rookie season following surgery on a torn meniscus and started 10 games in 2025.
Speaking on his show, Emmanuel Acho said the concerns date back to McCarthy’s time at Michigan. He argued that the signs were evident before the quarterback entered the league.
“J.J. McCarthy was a bust when he left college. Let’s be real. J.J. McCarthy wasn’t great in college, and he hasn’t been great in the NFL. He had a great preseason game, and I jumped on the bandwagon of that preseason game.”
“But let’s be for real. J.J. McCarthy, Anthony Richardson. I said neither of them were great in college. Why are we surprised neither of them have been great in the league?”
Acho also pointed to Michigan’s offensive approach, suggesting the program did not revolve around its quarterback. The argument framed McCarthy’s professional struggles as consistent with his collegiate profile.
Vikings evaluating quarterback options
Minnesota installed J.J. McCarthy as its starter in 2025 after Sam Darnold departed, but injuries again limited his season. The organization is reportedly reviewing veteran alternatives as it prepares for 2026.
He ended last year with a 57.6% completion rate, 1,632 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and a 72.6 passer rating.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell previously labeled McCarthy the franchise quarterback, while acknowledging circumstances have changed. With a roster positioned to compete, scrutiny surrounding McCarthy’s third season is increasing.
How Minnesota proceeds will determine whether McCarthy retains control of the job or faces significant competition moving forward.
