Emilio Izaguirre left Celtic last summer for a reported £1.25 million.

Honduras' Emilio Izaguirre drives the ball during a training in San Pedro Sula, 180 km north of Tegucigalpa, on October 9, 2017.

Emilio Izaguirre has revealed to The Daily Record the pearls of wisdom that former Celtic boss Neil Lennon imparted on him when he joined the Hoops.

Izaguirre spent seven years at Parkhead, before being sold by Brendan Rodgers last summer after Kieran Tierney made that left-back position his own.

The 31-year-old joined under Lennon back in 2010 and says that the Celtic legend used Scott Brown as a paradigm for longevity in the game, telling him to study the midfielder’s diet.

“When i first joined Celtic, Neil Lennon told me to look at Scott Brown’s diet,” he told The Record. “He never went to the gym, but was always lean and fit.”

If it looked like good advice then, it definitely does now.

Brown, at the age of 32, has just won PFA Scotland Player of the Year, having also cleaned up at the Hoops’ End of Season awards, and it’s clear that the veteran midfielder looks after himself in a major way.

The former Scotland international turns 33 in June but even as he gets older, his influence on the pitch does not wane – or at least hasn’t up until now – and it’s a glowing reflection on his commitment to the cause that he has been this professional for the past eight years.
