Emilio Izaguirre has told Honduran outfit El Heraldo that he is set to sign a two-year contract with former club Celtic in what is one of the most surprising transfers of this summer’s window.

The 32-year-old left Celtic last summer, joining Saudi Arabian side Al-Feiha, but has since cancelled his contract with the Asian side in a bid to rejoin Brendan Rodgers’ side.

A 97-time international, Izaguirre spent seven years at Celtic, starring on the left side of defence and clocking up a huge 252 appearances for the Hoops and indeed winning six Scottish Premiership trophies.

Now, the defender is set for a sensational return to Parkhead, after confirming that he will undergo a medical on Thursday with a view to signing a two-year deal at Celtic and join in training on Friday.

Speaking on Wednesday, Izaguirre said: “I’m going to do my medical exams tomorrow. On Friday, I will go to the training sessions. The idea is to sign a contract of two years.”

Celtic currently have Kieran Tierney as their first-choice defender on the left flank, while youngster Calvin Miller has been given a chance here and there. But the Hoops have used Callum McGregor over Miller at times.

It has tempted Rodgers to add experience as cover, and that has led him back to Izaguirre, who made 28 appearances for Al-Feiha last season.
