Emile Heskey has told the Echo that Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge needs more game time to get his career back on track.

Sturridge has only started three Premier League games for the Reds this season, scoring once in the 4-0 win over Arsenal.

Jurgen Klopp has preferred Roberto Firmino as his lone striker despite the Brazilian struggling himself in front of goal.

Former Liverpool forward Heskey sympathises with Sturridge’s situation but admits his position at Liverpool appears bleak.

“He needs more games and any player would say the same,” Heskey said in the Liverpool Echo.

“That’s when you get the best out of yourself and enjoy your football. He needs that right now but Liverpool are obviously not giving it to him so it’s a difficult time for him.”

Sturridge was once a key player at Anfield, scoring 21 times as Liverpool narrowly missed out on the title in the 2013-14 season.

But injuries and an apparent lack of trust from his manager have restricted him to just 28 starts in the four seasons since.

Heskey himself faced the same stick-or-twist choice during his Liverpool career, and moved on to Birmingham City and then Wigan Athletic.

Should Sturridge decide to leave Liverpool, he would surely have a choice of more glamorous suitors.
