The ex-England striker believes Alli has too much to his game to just be compared with the former Spurs and Three Lions hero.
Former England striker Emile Heskey has told Omnisport, as quoted by Goal, that Dele Alli deserves more than to be simply compared to former Tottenham Hotspur and Three Lions great Paul Gascoigne because he is a unique talent.
Alli enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough season for club and country since making his Spurs debut as a substitute on the opening day of the season, racking up 10 goals and nine assists in his first Premier League campaign.
His dazzling form and enigmatic style of play have brought comparisons with former Spurs and England hero Gascoigne because of his marauding attacking style and combative, occasionally aggressive, spirit.
Ex-Tottenham and Three Lions striker Teddy Sheringham said earlier this year that the manner in which the 20-year-old has exploded onto the scene is reminiscent of the impact Gascoigne had for club and country in his prime.
However, Sheringham’s former England teammate Heskey believes that billing does not do the youngster any favours, stressing that Alli does not need to be compared with any player because he is so talented in his own right.
The 38-year-old told Omnisport, as quoted by Goal: “I think he’s totally different [to anyone]. I wouldn’t compare him to Gazza. He’s got his own traits and he’s a fantastic player. He’s a goalscorer. He’s a driving force from the midfield.
“Someone who drives with the ball past players and can start things and get things going. He’s that player. He can play so many different positions.
“You can play him inside a little bit rather than out wide – you can play him in the number 10 role or just play him in the midfield three, but attacking-wise.”
Alli looks set to be one of the jewels in England’s crown at his first major tournament this summer, with the midfielder having sparkled in the friendly internationals last autumn and this spring.
His link-up with Spurs teammate Harry Kane, which reaped reward after just three minutes of the recent win over Turkey, could be key for the hopes of Roy Hodgson’s side in France.
