Emiliano Buendia has tweeted ‘we back’ after joining in with Steven Gerrard’s first training session at Aston Villa yesterday.
Gerrard gets to work
Gerrard put his Villa players through their paces for the first time at Bodymoor Heath in what looked like a lively session.
One of Gerrard’s first tasks will be to find a way to get the best out of the Argentine playmaker.
Villa bought Buendia for £40 million in the summer from Norwich City (Daily Mail), but he is yet to show his true quality in a claret and blue shirt.
Buendia has scored just one goal and claimed a solitary assist in his 10 Villa appearances so far.
But his tweet yesterday seemed to suggest that he enjoyed Gerrard’s first training session in charge.
Back to his best?
Villa have been relying on Buendia to provide them with the creativity that they lost from Jack Grealish’s departure.
Dean Smith struggled to find a way to get him to function at his very best, though.
There have been accusations that Smith didn’t always play Buendia in his best position, and it is still far too early to write the 24-year-old off.
But it will be interesting to see how Gerrard deploys the former Norwich City man during his time in charge.
Gerrard will be in the Villa dugout for the very first time at the weekend, when they take on Brighton & Hove Albion.
