Tottenham Hotspur have failed with an opening bid for Giovani Lo Celso, report BBC Sport. Real Betis want higher than the £53 million reportedly offered.

Lo Celso has thrived at Betis this season, sent on loan from PSG and signed permanently.

His PSG exit came about after the departure of manager Unai Emery to Arsenal, with Thomas Tuchel not as big a fan.

Lo Celso made his debut for PSG under Emery and he was a player the current Gunners boss greatly admired, even if he played him in a more defensive role than the attacking midfield position where he has been thriving in Spain.

Emery told Sport France last year: “He works with humility for opportunities, he earns minutes, it’s a progression he got with work. He’s a good example for everyone.”

Arsenal might want to consider making a move for Lo Celso themselves.

He would provide an alternative to Mesut Ozil, but even forgetting the German for a moment, he could fulfil the role set to be vacated by Aaron Ramsey.

Lo Celso can do it all, scoring 16 goals from midfield this season and providing 11 assists. His previous work with Emery could help him settle quickly at Arsenal.

The only problem is the price. Lo Celso could be beyond Arsenal’s budget. If he proves to be within Tottenham’s, then that’s a worrying sign.
