Newcastle United would stand a better chance of signing Kenedy if his ‘replacement’ had been a success.
Newcastle United loanee Kenedy has been a huge success since joining from Chelsea in January and fans are keen to see him sign permanently.
Kenedy has scored two goals and provided two assists in eight games, helping Newcastle to secure their Premier League status and pull clear of the relegation scrap.
He was considered expendable by Chelsea, who only used him in cup competitions.
The Brazilian’s move to Newcastle was decided in January after Chelsea spent £17.6 million to sign Emerson Palmieri.
Palmieri plays at left-back, the same position Chelsea considered Kenedy in for their wing-back role.
The problem is that Emerson has been a major bust so far, playing just 15 minutes of Premier League action.
He arrived coming off a serious knee injury, but has been fit since he came to the club, he just simply has not been able to force his way into the Chelsea team, despite their indifferent form.
He was an unused substitute at the weekend again as Chelsea drew 2-2 at home to West Ham.
Chelsea would have been better off this season not signing him at all, and sticking with Kenedy, although the Newcastle loanee has clearly benefitted by playing regularly.
It is the latest in a series of questionable transfers and lack of planning at Chelsea, who have talented youngsters who they simply don’t show faith in, and sign players to block their path who might not even be any better.
Emerson’s poor start at Chelsea could make it more difficult for the Blues to sanction a permanent departure for Kenedy.
The smart move would be to give Emerson another year, a full season to prove himself, and send Kenedy on loan for 2018/19.
That way they will not be giving up on a big talent, and have some leeway if Emerson’s struggles continue, to sell up and give Kenedy a chance at Stamford Bridge.
