Some Aston Villa fans on social media have been reacting after Liverpool attempted to get their Carabao Cup clash with Arsenal postponed.

Why do Villa fans care about this?

You may be wondering, what does a game between Liverpool and Arsenal in the Carabao Cup have to do with Aston Villa?

Well, it’s not the fixture that matters, it’s the fact that Liverpool want the game postponed.

Villa were in a very similar situation last season ahead of an FA Cup clash with the Reds, but they played through with a team entirely made up of youth players.

Inevitably, Liverpool won 4-1 as they played a very strong XI, dashing Villa’s hopes of lifting the FA Cup in 2021.

The Villans were made to play through due to the time constraints of the FA Cup’s schedule, and now that the shoe is on the other foot, the Villa Park faithful aren’t too happy that Liverpool are trying to get the game pushed back.

Context is key

Villa fans aren’t happy, but do they have any right not to be?

Of course, last season’s drama was less than ideal, and it wasn’t fair that Villa had to play a youth team vs Liverpool, but two wrongs don’t make a right.

As last season showed, the Carabao Cup is a competition that is flexible in terms of scheduling. After all, the final was pushed back almost two months last year, and if Liverpool can’t field an XI, then why shouldn’t the match be postponed?

This time last year, Villa faced an almost unprecedented situation, but now, the governing bodies are much more prepared, and a postponement would make sense.
