What a miserable night for Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
Leeds conceded seven goals in Tuesday night’s mauling by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola’s outfit were in ruthless mood but, by the same token, the Ellanad Road club contributed to their own demise with a number of goals.
Kevin de Bruyne scored a 25-yard thumper for arguably the pick of the bunch.
But Tim Sherwood, speaking to Optus Sport, has criticised the young Leeds keeper for his ’embarrassing’ effort to stop the Belgian’s drive.
He said: “Look at the goalkeeper there. I don’t know why he dives. It’s embarrassing.”
Is Sherwood right?
Well, he honestly might have a point.
There’s no doubt that De Bruyne’s shot was hit with a cobra-like venom but the television replays illustrate that maybe, just maybe, Meslier could’ve done better.
It was the speed of De Bruyne’s hit which beat the Leeds man, not the direction, and the way in which he dived was a little suspect, it has to be said.
Meslier, a £5 million permanent signing by Leeds during the summer of 2020, has one hell of a future in football.
However, we’re talking about a 21-year-old and somebody of his position doesn’t generally mature until their late 20s.
