Newcastle United supporters are not happy with claims that Dwight Gayle has signed a new contract.
The Athletic suggest that Gayle has penned a new three-year deal to stay at Newcastle beyond the expiration of his current contract.
Gayle hasn’t played frequently at all for Newcastle this season, but he has now been offered new terms to stick around.
And Magpies fans think that they are showing a real lack of ambition by keeping Gayle around.
If Newcastle are relegated then Gayle, of course, becomes a very viable option.
The striker has proven to be one of the most lethal finishers in the second tier, and he will surely guarantee goals.
However, Gayle being offered a new contract, despite not being a regular for Steve Bruce’s side over two seasons now, does suggest that the club isn’t exactly making big strides for the future.
If Newcastle do stay up and bring in a new forward in the summer, then it is difficult to see where exactly Gayle fits in.
But today’s news may just hint that Newcastle aren’t planning to be particularly active in the transfer window, regardless of where they finish the season.
