Kris Boyd has called Diego Laxalt’s attempt at defending for Ross County’s winner against Celtic “embarrassing”.

The on-loan left-back replaced Greg Taylor after an early injury in Dingwall, and former Rangers man Boyd has held him responsible for Jordan White’s 71st-minute goal.

White’s header made the difference and ensured Rangers remained 18 points ahead of their rivals following a 4-1 win against Dundee United at Ibrox earlier on Sunday.

Despite a promising start after arriving from Milan earlier this season, Laxalt has been inconsistent.

The 28-year-old, who reportedly earns £22,250 per week in Glasgow, was also singled out by ex-Celtic man John Collins.

Speaking on Sky Sports after Ross County’s 1-0 win, Boyd said: “It’s embarrassing defending. We speak about how crucial set-pieces are.

“He’s got the cheek to stand with his hands in the air and actually question people around him. It’s terrible defending.

“For me, from set-plays, you’ve got to take responsibility.

“You can work on set-plays all day. When people drop their runners and don’t mark them, don’t pick them up…The goals that Celtic have lost.”

Collins added: “Two things about that goal. The delivery is fantastic. The movement from Jordan White is excellent. He’s gone that way, looked round that back, he’s really difficult to pick up.

“Diego Laxalt’s lost him. He’s lost him for a reason, because the movement was excellent.

“The coaching team will be absolutely raging that they’ve conceded that goal.”

That result means Rangers need just seven points from their remaining eight Premiership matches in order to be crowned champions.

With two games remaining before the next derby, it’s possible that Steven Gerrard’s men could win the league at Celtic Park on March 21.

Neil Lennon’s side are next in action on Saturday, when they welcome Aberdeen to Celtic Park.
