It’s time for Manchester United’s captain to step it up.

Manchester United striker’s poor form is rightfully coming under the spotlight.

Wayne Rooney needs to hope his 2016 is better than his 2015 – because there’s no way of putting a positive spin on it – it’s been awful.

A once prolific striker, the England international may have set a record for England and be closing in on Sir Bobby Charlton’s United record, but his performances have not been good.

The Red Devils captain has netted a paltry six league goals for United across the calendar year, and there are an incredible 32 players who have scored more than he has in 2015.

The list is topped by Harry Kane on 27, but also includes the likes of Glenn Murray and James Milner.

Worryingly for United, no player has reached double figures, although Juan Mata has at least hit more than Rooney, scoring eight goals.

Rooney has less than injured Liverpool striker Danny Ings, who has nine, scoring several for Burnley, while Watford forward Odion Ighalo, who has only played in the top flight sinc August, has more than doubled Rooney’s tally, netting 14.
