Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is quickly building a reputation as one of the more promising young midfielders in English football. But when it comes to role models, he looks no further than one of Arsenal’s current stars.

The 22-year-old has already broken into the England setup, earning six caps under Thomas Tuchel after his strong form at the City Ground was noticed by Gareth Southgate’s successor.

Playing for Nottingham Forest, Anderson may have aspirations beyond his current club. To make that jump, he’ll need to keep developing his game and raising his profile.

One way he’s looking to do that is by learning from those around him and paying close attention to top players in similar roles.

Nottingham Forest caused a stir when they spent big money to sign Elliott Anderson from Newcastle.

He was far from a regular at St James’ Park, and the £35m fee raised more than a few eyebrows.

But since the move, Anderson has settled in well, earning his place with England and playing alongside Declan Rice. He told the Daily Mail that he studies Rice’s game closely.

“I want to watch his games,” Anderson says. “To see how he’s playing and how he likes to play and stuff. I don’t keep in touch with him. I am still new to the team.

“But Declan has helped me massively in helping me to understand the role we both have.”

“He’s definitely more of the forward-thinking one. He’s the eight and I am the six,” Anderson explained.

“I like the way he controls the midfield and dictates play. Every time we play it’s building on that relationship.”

Anderson joined Nottingham Forest from Newcastle United in the summer of 2024, and there were questions over whether he could justify his £35 million price tag.

His time at St James’ Park hadn’t seen him feature regularly, but he’s since become a key figure at the City Ground, and is now part of England’s setup under Thomas Tuchel. “I want to watch his games,’ Anderson says. “To see how he’s playing and how he likes to play and stuff.
