Kenneth Zohore stunned Leeds United as Cardiff City won 2-0 at Elland Road in February – so should they battle Hull City for his signature?

Leeds United’s play-off hopes began to fall apart as winter turned to spring last season. While a tally of four defeats in April alone eventually cost them a place in the top six, it was a worrying spell in mid-February that foreshadowed the disappointment lying ahead.

A week after a battling 2-1 defeat to local rivals Huddersfield Town, who were eventually promoted to the Premier League via the play-offs, Leeds welcomed Cardiff City, and former manager Neil Warnock, to Elland Road.

Despite dominating 71 per cent of the possession, Garry Monk’s hosts failed to breach a well-drilled Bluebirds rearguard. And, with twenty minutes on the clock, Cardiff striker Kenneth Zohore clinched the win with a clinical finish.

It was the kind of dead-eyed efficiency that Leeds, who hit the target with just three of their 17 shots in that dispiriting defeat, could only dream of.

And it’s that kind of dead-eyed efficiency that looks set to make Zohore a player in high demand this summer. The Hull Daily Mail claim that Hull City, relegated from the Premier League last season, have identified the Danish Under-21 international as the goalscorer capable of firing them back to the top flight at the first time of asking.

One in two man

Yet, with Leeds aiming to learn from the mistakes of last season, where the failure to reinforce in attack cost them dear, they should throw their hat into the ring for a player who hit 12 goals in 24 Championship starts last season.

After all, beyond Chris Wood, the division’s Golden Boot winner in 2016/17, centre-back Kyle Bartley was Leeds’ second highest goalscorer last season with a measly six.

Zohore, a pacey and athletic striker, recently signed a new contract at Cardiff until 2020 so it’s fair to say he wouldn’t come cheap. Though, for Leeds, Premier League football would be priceless and Zohore could be worth every penny.
