Elliot Anderson helped Bristol Rovers pick up the first win of his loan spell with the League Two club – beating Sutton United 2-0 on Tuesday night. The Bristol Post have branded Anderson as “electric”, and gave him an 8/10.

Anderson, 19, has gone on loan for the first time – having impressed for the club’s Under-23 and making his senior debut last season. Anderson had scored 16 goals in 32 games from midfield for the club’s Under-23 side.

It saw him play in the senior side twice last season under Steve Bruce. But Newcastle are in the midst of a relegation scrap and introducing rookie players is hardly what Eddie Howe will want to be doing this season.

The youngster has joined fourth-tier side Rovers, who are managed by ex-Toon midfielder Joey Barton. He has already played four times, and got his first goal involvement on Wednesday – an assist in a 2-0 win.

The Bristol Post rated him at 8/10, saying: “The Geordie boy was electric, excelling on the half-turn in particular. Claimed the assist for the opening goal. He should be pleased with a good night’s work, he caused problems.”

Anderson impressing: Does he have a Newcastle future?

Realistically, Newcastle are going to bring in a number of players in the summer window. Anderson already finds the likes of Ryan Fraser, Miguel Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximin, Jacob Murphy and more in his way.

A loan move might boost his chances of returning to Newcastle to get first-team football. But realistically, it just shows everyone else what he is capable of. It puts him in the shop window. Other clubs will be watching.
