Few players have a point to prove quite like Radamel Falcao. However, his performance on Tuesday suggests a return to his peak is increasingly unlikely.

A matter of days after Monaco’s vice-president Vadim Vasilyev claimed Manchester United and Chelsea had “failed” Radamel Falcao, the endangered Tigre was handed the ideal opportunity to prove to a scrutinising English audience that he’s still ‘got it’.

Falcao must have fantasised about netting in London and showing his former Premier League employers that they hadn’t given him the respect he deserves.

90 minutes later, Monaco were celebrating a famous Wembley win against Tottenham Hotspur, with Fabinho, Bernardo Silva and Kamil Glik further enhancing their reputation. Falcao, however, did little to counter the claims of his demise.

The least effective component of a chugging Monaco machine, the 30-year-old’s visible lack of pace and confidence remains a grim sight for anyone who watched on in wonder as he galloped through defences at Atletico Madrid and Porto.

Unless he can spectacularly turn things around, El Tigre looks to be on the verge of extinction.

I’ve just seen falcao run over 5yds towards goal without losing the ball or falling over never thought I’d tweet those words #mufc

No sympathy for Falcao’s decline, the man moved to Monaco for money reasons when he could of gone to any top team in Europe at the time

Radamel Falcao at Chelsea

Spurs lost to a team playing the ghost of Falcao up top. The other two teams are Leverkusen and CSKA. That’s a tricky group.

Monaco have been hiding under a rock the last 2 years if they seriously think Falcao will be a ‘prolific’ goal scorer again.

There’s always hope. Though denial is always the first stage of grief.

Good to see Falcao happy again, England just didn’t suit him. My man will turn elite again.
