Arsenal are in talks over a tie-up with Real Betis for the development of young players. Who should they look at loaning out?
It was once again reported this week that Arsenal are looking at forging an official link-up with Real Betis to help develop young players, building on the success of Joel Campbell.
The Costa Rican is expected to be sent out for a second successive year at the club, after impressing this term in La Liga.
So who could join him if the agreement is formalised? Here are five who might be offered the opportunity…
Thomas Eisfeld
After superb performances in pre-season for Arsenal, and a stellar display in the League Cup against Reading, it is a shame we have not seen more of Eisfeld this year, and if he is not going to get regular first team chances next season then a loan will be best for his development. Betis are likely to cash in on Benat in the summer meaning they will have a gap in the centre of midfield, and the young German spark Eisfeld could be the perfect surprise man to fill it and make a name for himself.
Hector Bellerin
Bellerin has been one of Arsenal’s most impressive performers in the NextGen Series, showing why he could have a big future at the club. He has been talked about as cover for Carl Jenkinson next season, but if Bacary Sagna stays he will remain further back in the pecking order. A season in his homeland could be ideal for him, although Arsenal may want to avoid him getting too comfortable there; when they loaned Fran Merida to Real Sociedad the experience made him decide to sign a permanent deal with a La Liga club.
Serge Gnabry
Gnabry is Arsenal’s best prospect, dazzling in the youth set up, scoring a highlight reel of sensational goals. The winger is close to the first team, but if Wenger decides he is not quite ready to give him regular chances then a loan move may be more beneficial. In an open league like La Liga, Gnabry could do some serious damage and enhance his reputation even further.
Ignasi Miquel
Miquel has been on the verge of breaking through at Arsenal for several seasons without ever quite making it. It is essential for his development now that he gets to play regularly, and allowing himself to do so away from the Premier League spotlight could be the way to go. Miquel needs experience and confidence, and if he can gain that at Betis he may be able to convince Arsene Wenger upon his return that he is a viable option in central defence.
Wellington
Exciting trickster Wellington Silva was once hailed as the next big thing when joining Arsenal, but has not yet played a game for the club. He has been loaned out to Spain but not in La Liga, currently he is with Segunda Liga side Ponferradina. He has a contract at Arsenal until 2016, so the Gunners should consider giving him the chance to step up a level and see whether he sinks or swims. Either way it should be an invaluable experience for him, and he will have all the motivation to succeed he needs.
