Liverpool fans can be grateful that the Reds missed out on some of these players.
While some Liverpool fans may be left frustrated from time to time when the Reds miss out on their targets, there have been a number of occasions when missing out on those targets has proved to be a blessing in disguise.
With that in mind, HITC Sport is taking a look back at eight times Liverpool dodged a transfer bullet when their targets headed elsewhere…
Sylvain Marveaux
According to the Telegraph, Liverpool rejected the chance to sign Sylvain Marveaux after he failed a medical back in 2011. He ultimately joined Newcastle, for whom he scored once in 38 Premier League games before being released in 2016.

Clint Dempsey
Liverpool made such an effort to sign Clint Dempsey from Fulham in 2012 that they actually announced that they had signed the American without actually completing a deal, according to the Telegraph. He would actually join Tottenham during that window, and go on to score just seven times before he returned to MLS.
Gaston Ramirez
The Daily Mail reported in 2012 that Liverpool had made a £16.3 million bid for Gaston Ramirez. He would join Southampton that summer, but undoubtedly failed to justify the Saints’ interest before he moved to Middlesbrough. After a promising loan spell, his time at the Riverside Stadium has since been incredibly disappointing.

Loic Remy
Loic Remy has threatened to be a prolific Premier League scorer, but bad moves and frequent injuries have meant that those glimpses of quality have predominantly been few and far between. A move to Liverpool fell through in 2014 despite an £8 million fee being agreed because of his medical, the Daily Mail reported. In the three seasons since, he has scored just eight league goals.
Jean-Alain Boumsong
The Guardian reported back in 2003 that Liverpool were keen on then-Auxerre defender Jean-Alain Boumsong. He would join Rangers one year later, and finally arrive in the Premier League in 2005 with Newcastle, where he generally looked to be out of his depth.
Michael Turner
Rafa Benitez confirmed to the Guardian that he wanted to bring then-Hull ace Michael Turner to Anfield back in 2009. The Tigers wanted £10 million for the centre-back and that appeared to cost the Reds. Somehow however, it is difficult to imagine Turner going down in the pantheon of great defenders if he had joined Liverpool.

Carlton Cole
Roy Hodgson tried several times to bring Carlton Cole to Liverpool back in 2010, according to the Daily Mail, but the two clubs could not agree a fee. Reds fans are surely glad that Hodgson did not get his man, with Cole scoring just five times that season as West Ham were relegated.
David Wheater
Rafa Benitez wanted Liverpool to sign David Wheater in 2008 and 2009, according to the Telegraph. He would eventually leave Middlesbrough for Bolton in 2011, dropping into League One with the Trotters at one stage.
