The Tottenham Hotspur forward is scoring for fun this summer.
When Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino opted not to take Shayon Harrison on the club’s pre-season tour of the USA, it was widely believed the young forward would be heading back out on loan next season.
However, the 20-year-old’s blistering form for Spurs’ under-23s during their own summer preparations suggests a rethink should be in order.
After all, Harrison has found the net an impressive eight times in recent weeks, including a hat-trick against Cambridge United and goals against Ebbsfleet United, Paris Saint-Germain, Guingamp, Lorient and Standard Liege.
That is quite a response after being omitted from Tottenham’s senior squad ahead of the new campaign, and while he could struggle for game time when everyone is fit and available he has certainly made a big statement.
Harrison spent the second half of the last campaign on loan at Yeovil Town, but a return of just one goal in 13 outings was not what anyone would have expected when he completed the move.
Much of that could be down to his age, however he needs to start performing consistently at first-team level and his showings over the summer suggest he has now well and truly outgrown the second string.
Only time will tell if he has done enough to force his way back into Pochettino’s short-term plans, yet whatever happens, Tottenham clearly have a talented young goal-scorer in their ranks who, in time, will get his chance.
