Eidur Gudjohnsen suggests Tottenham Hotspur wanted to keep him in 2010

The Icelandic legend had just been on a loan spell at the club and Harry Redknapp had informed him he wanted him to stay.

In January 2010 Tottenham Hotspur brought Icelandic legend and former Chelsea forward Eidur Gudjohnsen back to the Premier League on loan from AS Monaco.

The former Bolton Wanderers and Chelsea attacker had left England for Barcelona in 2006 and joined Monaco the previous summer. But he failed to settle in French football and Spurs boss Harry Redknapp snapped him up on loan until the end of the 2009-10 season – beating West Ham United to his signature.

He has now been speaking to FourFourTwo about his time with Spurs and admitted he enjoyed his time at White Hart Lane – even if it was brief.

He stated:

“A lot of Chelsea fans won’t be happy that I’m saying this, but I enjoyed my time at Tottenham.

“We had a good team, with Gareth Bale and Luka Modric, and also guys like Peter Crouch, Ledley King, Niko Kranjcar, [Heurelho] Gomes in goal – a lot of really good footballers.”

He even went on to suggest that Spurs wanted him back – but that for whatever reason no deal ever came about.

“The last words that I heard from Harry Redknapp were: ‘See you pre-season. You have been brilliant for us – we’re going to need you next season’. That never happened.

“I still had a contract with Monaco, so I went back there. Whether the two clubs couldn’t agree a transfer fee, I’ll never really know.”

Gudjohnsen went on to help Spurs to a fourth-placed finish ahead of Manchester City – scoring twice in 14 appearances for the club – as Redknapp took them back into the premier European competition.

His form earned him a move to Stoke City but he has lived a journeyman’s career ever since in Greece, Belgium and China – with a spell back at Bolton last season.

Whilst he may always be remembered most fondly at Stamford Bridge, it seems Gudjohnsen is not afraid to acknowledge just how much he enjoyed his time at White Hart Lane.
